In 1908 a Methodist Espicopal Church congregation was organized in Salem, Virginia. The frame building was constructed for worship and Chirstian education of its members and neighbors at Third and Colorado Streets. Additions came later. Mini World Day Care now encompasses this building.
We became the First Methodist Episcopal Church. Three name changes have occured since then.
The first in 1939, when the three branches of Methodist united, at that time our name was
changed to Second Methodist Church. The second took place on September 6,1954, when by initiative
of the local church, we became Central Methodist. The third change was on April 23,1968, the Uniting
Conference in Dallas, Texas, consummated the union of the Methodist Church and the Evangelical
United Brethren, adding United to our name. Thus, we became and are officially the Central United
Methodist Church.
